The MYP applies an interdisciplinary approach for the development of knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills that allow students to participate actively and responsibly in an ever-changing world.
The core concepts underlying MYP framework support students in ‘learning to learn’, incorporating skills and contextualizing student learning in the real world. Moreover, an inquiry-based approach fosters intercultural understanding and supports students in becoming creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
IST became an authorised MYP School in 2008 and is currently authorised to offer both three IBO programs (PYP, MYP, DP), making it one of the few IB “World Schools” in Italy offering the complete IB continuum,
Language and literature (English and/or Italian), Language acquisition (English and/or Italian, French or Dutch or Spanish), Individuals and Society, Integrated Science, Standard or Advanced Mathematics, Physical Education
One subject chosen between Art, Music or Physical and Health Education. Although a minimum of 50 hours of teaching per subject is required per year, the IST offers more than the required amount in all compulsory areas.
In Grade 10, students undertake the creation of a personal and independent piece of work. At the end of the year an Exhibition is held to showcase students’ works. The Personal Project is a compulsory activity, externally assessed by IB, required in order to complete the MYP.
Six themes allow students to create connections across different disciplinary areas:
Space and Time Orientation; Identity and relationships; Globalization and Sustainability; Personal and Cultural Expression; Scientific and Technical Innovation; Justice and Development. Teachers plan cooperatively to further support this holistic aspect of the program.
School supports and guides students in their engagement in projects involving the activity of service within the school community and beyond. Our wellbeing program, led by a school counselor, also aims to support students in a holistic way, providing a safe space to discuss and deal with issues specific to this age range.
Student performance is measured through formative and summative assessments aimed at guiding future teaching and learning. Student work is assessed according to standards established by IB. Teachers share this criteria with students to foster responsibility for their own learning.
Co-Curricular Secondary Latin Program
Starting from 2025, IST has provided students with the unique opportunity to dive into the world of Classics through the study of the Latin language. The program, available from Grade 7 to Grade 10, combines academic rigour with a narrative story-based approach, making learning both engaging and practical.
The basics of grammar are taught through the translation of adapted texts in the first years of study, before moving on to advanced texts of poetry, philosophy and history, written by the greatest minds of ancient Rome.
Latin is at the root of every Western European language. Students interested in pursuing modern language studies will greatly benefit from the understanding of Latin grammar principles. Students wishing to pursue law or medicine studies will also benefit from classical studies, both linguistically (understanding the origin of medical and legal terms) and critically (analysing in depth the meaning of various texts)
The Personal project at IST is a key component of the MYP program, providing students with the unique opportunity to pursue a project based on their own passions and interests. This project, usually undertaken in the last year of MYP, works as a final experience in which students independently select, research and create a product or outcome reflecting their exploration.
Throughout the project stages – topic choice, extensive research, product creation and process consideration – students become aware of their strengths and areas to improve. The Personal Project allows students to match their learning to real life contexts, fostering a sense of responsibility and satisfaction in creating something meaningful.
Beyond the specific knowledge of subjects, the Personal Project is designed to develop a wide range of essential skills that are useful for the student’s academic path and personal future. During the process, students improve their research abilities, learning to gather and critically evaluate information. Moreover, they strengthen their organizational skills, setting goals, planning timelines and autonomously meeting deadlines.
Furthermore, the project encourages students to think critically and creatively, solve problems and reflect on their progress. These skills are key to preparing students, not just to the challenges of the Diploma IB Program, but also to the complexities of university and professional life, making the Personal Project a cornerstone of personal growth and academic rigour at IST.
The Personal Project offers students the opportunity to apply skills and prove their knowledge of the Approaches to Learning (ATL).
