The IST Eco Club is an initiative of the International School of Turin that puts students at the heart of environmental protection and sustainability promotion.
This club offers children the opportunity to be an active part of change, encouraging them to develop a greater environmental awareness and translate their ideas into concrete actions.
Although IST is a relatively small community, Eco Club students understand the importance of their doing and the value of every action in bringing about a positive impact. Therefore, the club focuses on local and community projects engaging students in hands-on, collaborative activities fostering a real and lasting change. Through their efforts, students learn to become responsible citizens actively contributing to a more sustainable future.
The IST Eco Club actively participates in numerous events and projects about environment protection.
Among the activities, the club engages in:
Organic gardens and sustainable nutrition
The school Eco Club manages organic gardens where students cultivate fruit and vegetables used in the school cafeteria. This project not only promotes sustainable agriculture and permaculture, but also helps students to develop a more conscious relationship with food.
Carbon print reduction
The Eco Club actively works to monitor and reduce the school CO₂ emissions through different strategies, among which are the optimization of energy consumption, improvement of energy efficiency of buildings and promotion of renewable energies.
Pollinator protection
A particularly innovative initiative is the creation of protected areas for bees and other pollinator insects, essential for the ecosystem balance. The club has installed houses for solitary bees, planted wildflowers and launched an awareness program on the importance of bees.
Energy efficiency and energy saving
Students participate in energy consumption monitoring programs and develop energy saving solutions, such as the use of smart sensors to regulate lighting and heating in a more sustainable way.
Sustainable mobility
The IST Eco Club actively promotes the use of sustainable means of transport, encouraging carpooling, cycling and public transport to reduce the carbon footprint due to daily commuting.
Events for the Earth Day
Every year, the IST Eco Club organises activities for Earth Day engaging students and teachers in lectures and environmental education workshops. During these events, topics such as climate change, protection of local fauna and best practices to reduce environmental impact are addressed.
CioCheMangio – Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
A partnership launched by the school offering the community the opportunity to receive fresh local and organic food. The program, active from September to June, consists of a weekly distribution of seasonal baskets containing fruit, vegetables and eggs, supporting local farmers through sustainable agricultural practices and fair prices. The initiative also contributes to reducing transport, packaging and wastes, fostering biodiversity and conscious consumption.
The IST Eco Club is part of the Eco School program, an educational initiative recognised by the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
Thanks to this program, IST offers an environmental education path starting from the early years of school and engaging every student in hands-on educational activities related to sustainability.
Through this project, students not only learn theoretical concepts but also become truly sustainable ambassadors, spreading ecological culture both within the school and the local community.
