Primary Performing Arts

At the International School of Turin (IST), students have the opportunity to explore, experiment and develop their own creativity through a wide range of co-curricular experiences. The Co-curricular Program is designed to offer them a space for growth beyond traditional classes, helping them to communicate effectively, think critically and learn through practice.

In the 2024/2025 school year, IST introduced the Primary Performing Arts: a new co-curricular course designed to offer Primary Years Programme (PYP) students a structured and engaging experience in the Performative Arts.

Through a system of rotating modules, children from first to fifth Grade have the opportunity to discover and experiment different art forms among which:

  • Theatre – to develop self confidence, communicational skills and stage expressiveness through acting and improvising.
  • Dance – to explore movement as an artistic language, improving coordination, rhythm and creativity.
  • Choir – to hone vocal technique, harmony and listening skills.
  • Percussion and strings – to develop rhythm, coordination and collaboration through music.

Art is not just entertainment, but a universal language allowing students to express emotions, tell stories and have a better understanding of the surrounding world.

The Co-curricular course of performing Arts is not limited to teaching artistic disciplines, but is integrated to the school curriculum helping students to make connections among arts and other subjects’ Units of Inquiry. Units of Inquiry are a learning method used in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) that allows children to explore a topic from different perspectives, asking questions and finding out new connections among subjects. Performative arts enrich this journey, helping students better understand topics covered through creative expression, movement and music. Through expressive practice, children learn to collaborate, solve problems creatively and develop a greater awareness of themselves and others. The program encourages experimentation and exploration, offering a safe and stimulating environment where every student can try, fail, grow and get better.

Learn from the best

As an added value of this co-curricular course, students have the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals. They have the chance to work with internationally active musicians, performers and dance teachers that will bring their experience and passion in the class. Among external tutors are members of the prestigious Rai Orchestra and specialists of the Filieradarte per la Danza Educativa, as well as other experts in the performing arts. This collaboration allows students to live an authentic experience, learning professional techniques and delving deeper in their relationship with arts. This co-curricular course for PYP students is a unique opportunity for students to develop their talent, explore new forms of expression and grow through art in an environment that fosters creativity and learning through practice.
